Himy Syed broke his fast with thirty different Muslim congregations in the GTA over the course of Ramadan. He visited apartment building basements, store fronts and grand masjids with minarets. He found beauty in them all.

Canadian author Jane Urquhart fought to try to keep a church in her community alive even though she doesn’t go to church herself.

Shaikh Abdool Hamid on Fasting the Six Days of Shawwal after Ramadan.

Ayyub (Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) said, “Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days from Shawwal it is as if they fasted the entire year.” [Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah; Ahmad transmitted it from Jabir, Muntaqa]

Thawban (Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) said, “Whoever fasts Ramadan, and then six days after Eid, it is [like fasting] an entire year. Whoever does a good deed shall have ten times its reward.” [Ibn Majah, Muntaqa]

A zawiya is a term used for a place of spiritual retreat. There is a special place in north Toronto, amongst various warehouse-type looking places, known as a zawiya. It is not open all the time, but on special occasions such as the first Sunday of every month, Thursday evenings, and various other annual events.

I’ve been there a few times and each time it is a special experience. During very crowded occasions, the sisters go upstairs and can see the event downstairs on a live feed. During more typical occasions, the sisters are in a room towards the back and the brothers are in the front.

Tonight was a typical occasion.
